Opaque purple with a cherry flush in color, this wine is intensely aromatic with notes of plum, ripe cherries, currants spiced with licorice, mocha and sandalwood. The full, lush palate is complemented by new leather and bitter chocolate characters and a long, seamless structure with fine tannins.
Produced entirely from Craggy Range’s Gimblett Gravels Vineyard, nestled on the right bank of the Ngaruroro River, the 2004 Sophia is a blend of the very best Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc parcels of the vineyard. The grapes were hand harvested and destemmed before fermenting in closed-top oak vessels. The wine then spendt 20 months maturing in 70% new French barriques. The early spring conditions brought excellent bud break followed by typical blustery weather that was just slightly cooler and drier than average. Flowering conditions were excellent, which resulted in a set of relatively heavy crops. From the middle of January through February a series of cold, dramatic weather events crossed the country. The result was fewer growing days and a dramatic slowing in the vine ripening pattern. April was an excellent month, with sunny, dry weather providing ideal conditions. The grapes were left on the vine up to three weeks later than normal, creating great color, tannin ripeness and flavors. An excellent companion to roast beef and steak as well as lamb dishes.
