Quick Overview

The rich cherry intensity of this wine carries spice along in its wake, bringing cedar and ancho-chile scents through its chocolate layers of tannins. It's tightly built, the flavors lasting on fruit, suited to several years of bottle age.
Te Muna Road Vineyard Pinot Noir

Details

In the cool-climate region of Martinborough, the 33-hectare terraced Te Muna Road Vineyard is planted with eight clones of Pinot Noir in more than 40 different parcels. On the vineyard’s two distinct terraces, stony soils produce exceptional Pinot Noir. Grapes were hand harvested and destemmed before undergoing fermentation in a combination of open-top stainless steel and tanks and French oak cuves. The wine matured for 10 months on the lees in French oak barriques. 2011 is an exciting vintage. A wet bud burst came in October and November. After a previously cool summer, fertility brought lots of grapes. Perfect flowering conditions had relatively warm days and low rainfall. Moderate winds were a catalyst for an excellent crop set. December and January were very warm; the former quite dry. Unusually early hydric stress prompted vineyard managers to irrigate. Excellent flowering and fruit set led to slow growth, producing bunches with many small berries. The warm summer continued into February, with minor rains, unusually high humidity and vine respiration, resulting in ripe flavors at lower sugar and acid levels. March was warm; intermittent rain lessened vine stress. A whirlwind harvest brought healthy fruit with intense flavors. Pinot Noir is pure, focused, flavorsome, tightly packed and long. Shows prominent black cherry and boysenberry aromas, with rose petal, bark, and fresh mint notes. Rich oak, mushroom, soy and dried herb palate flavors are intriguing, adding complexity to the sweet, dark-fruited core. Game and lamb dishes.
