This vintage is a deep and dark Le Sol, with an opaque core and iridescent rim. The earth, fruits and florals all get expression here—scorched earth, dark plum, aniseed, thyme and lavender combine for an incredibly intense and complex bouquet. The palate is multilayered, with dry tannins tempered by succulent ripe fruit and integrated oak notes. Almost blueberry pie richness, but with the cut of structural acidity and tannin.
Gimblett Gravels Vineyard’s stony soils keep the growth and cropping of the old clone Syrah vines in check and provide warmth in the autumn, both critical factors in developing the enormous character and presence of the wine. The grapes were hand harvested and destemmed before undergoing fermentation in open-top oak vessels. The wine spent 18 months maturing in 47% new French oak barrels. 2013 was a very good, classic vintage with no extreme weather events. From September through April, rainfall and temperature tracked long-term averages very closely. A cool but dry start in spring meant that vine growth was slightly behind and required some early irrigation to propel shoot growth. December was wetter than usual, but it remained warm and flowering was excellent, setting good crops on all cultivars, which later required extensive bunch thinning. January and February brought dry, warm conditions, aiding in even and rapid ripening and development of flavor and color. March and April tracked long-term temperature averages but rainfall was higher than average. A profusion of blueberry and dark plum fruit aromas combine with spicy notes of black pepper, star anise, vanilla and a dusting of cocoa to create a simply stunning nose. The palate is firmly tannic, a structure that releases waves of flavor on the very long finish. This wine pairs best with wild game dishes.
