In 1974, almost 200 years after the establishment of the Champagne house of Louis Roederer and 100 years after the creation of Cristal, Jean-Claude Rouzaud decided to create the Cristal Rosé cuvée. Cristal Rosé is the rarest champagne produced by Champagne Louis Roederer. When the ideal vintage occurs and the wine is produced, it is done with regimented standards of winemaking that require a rigorous selection of crus, vintages, grapes and wine. The traditional skin maceration is used in order to gently extract the natural pigments for the unique color and create the particular style of this rosé. The cuvée Cristal Rosé is produced exclusively from the best grapes of Louis Roederer's own "Premier Cru" vineyards, primarily those of Aÿ, Verzenay, Verzy and Cumières for the Pinot Noir, and Le Mesnil sur Oger and Avize for the Chardonnay. Exceptionally, these vines lie on a limestone block with clay and limestone soil and, in the best years, the vines achieve extraordinarily mature fruit with a crystalline purity of acidity corresponding perfectly to the Cristal style. Today the vineyards are cultivated according to biodynamic principles. Twenty percent of the wines are vinified in oak barrels with weekly batonnage and no malolactic fermentation. To create Rosé champagnes, Louis Roederer still uses the saignée method after cold maceration that can last five to eight days in the liquid phase. Cristal Rosé is matured six years in the cellar and rests for eight months after disgorgement to perfect its balance. Three words evoke this wine's style: refreshing, lively, and silky. This wine is a salmon pink hue with bright golden tints. It has a persistent stream of fine bubbles. Reminiscent of a summery bouquet of fresh fruit, with the right balance of sweetness and acidity (red currants and vine peach). The Pinot Noir's concentration and maturity adds distinctive notes of 'fruit liqueur' (raspberry) and aromas of roasted almonds and gingerbread. The attack is voluptuous- it is both intense and amazingly light; a concentrated blend of fruit based on chalky freshness and firm, but well-integrated tannins that strengthen the wine's precision and appeal. The ensemble is very harmonious, beautifully integrated, and gives an impression of natural fullness, which is both refined and profound. Cristal Rosé 2007 is a perfect evocation of the ripe fruit of the 2006 vintage gathered from the chalky terroirs of the Cristal Rosé vineyards. 2007 was a very warm year, featuring contrasting rainfall conditions. After an unusually cool and rainy August, September's warm, dry weather accelerated fruit maturation and produced distinctive, rich, and complex grapes.
