Quick Overview

The early part of the 2010 vintage was marked by cooler temperatures, below the norm. But warmer temperatures in August were timed perfectly to ripen the grapes prior to harvest. The cooling influence resulted in bright, balanced wines. Lively, deep ruby red with complex scents of mature red fruits (mainly black cherry), spices, notes of liquorice and hints of myrtle. An elegant wine that shows exceptional workmanship. Pair with braised lamb or rich stews such as osso buco or a Moroccan lamb tagine.

Details

Barrua” is the name of the vineyard parcel within the Sulcis Iglesente region in southwest Sardinia. Grapes are sourced from the Barrua and Narcao vineyards. The Sulcis region is dominated by Carignano, the blend’s predominant grape of Spanish origin that is known for elegant and velvety tannins. Carignano has perfect terroir in the warm, well-exposed brown earth, composed of calcareous, clay and sandy soil. International varieties Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot also thrive in the area’s optimal conditions. Bush vines are closely planted to minimize yields and maximize the wine’s concentration. Production is low: 4,000 liters per hectare. The final blend is a mix of these grapes balanced for the best results in the specific conditions of each harvest. Hand harvested whole bunches were destemmed, crushed and fermented on the skins for 12-15 days with periodic pumping over in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats at 25-28°C. Fermentation is completed on the lees until malolactic fermentation is finished; pumping over is done with extreme care. Each grape variety is vinified separately and the wine is transferred to barrique in early December. Barriques are French oak, medium toast, 50% new and 50% year old. After aging for 18 months, the blend is racked to various barriques for uniform aging, and then the wine rests for 20-30 days in fiberglass-lined cement tanks. The wine is bottled without filtration or clarification and released after 6 months in bottle. The early part of the 2010 vintage was marked by cooler temperatures, below the norm.
