Details

The 55-acre Tenuta Aluffi is one of the most prestigious estates in the southern part of Asti, near the town of Nizza Monferrato, a choice area for exceptional-quality Barbera. Within Aluffi is the La Court estate, with excellent soils of magnesium-rich calcareous marl and a beneficial south-southwest exposure. This jewel of vineyard land receives the fastidious attention of the Chiarlo family so that its old vines produce extraordinary grapes. Following fermentation in large oak casks, the wine is aged in oak barrels. After a normal winter temperatures and a bit of heavy snow, the growing season began quite early, in early March. April and May saw lots of rain, with occasional sunny days and warm temperatures; June and July had sunny days with lots of sun and with hot daytime temperatures and almost no rain. These climatic conditions eliminated the risk of mildew, oidium and other similar maladies. August had hot daytime temperatures (peaks of 32-33°C), wide day/night thermal shifts, and two well-timed periods of rain, which led to speedy and perfect ripening and aromatic development of the grapes. The early harvest yielded rich and healthy fruit with thick skins. 2009 will be remembered as a great vintage. The white grapes (Gavi, Arneis and Moscato) are especially rich and fresh, with expressive aromas. The red wines are complete and fine examples; Barbera d'Asti is exceptional, while the potential evident in Barolo and Barbaresco indicates a great vintage in the making. Shows aromas and flavors of spice, ripe black plum, black cherry and dark chocolate. The wine has coiled, tangy acidity and a velvety texture. Pairs well with red meat, game and tomato-based dishes.
