Quick Overview

A fragrant, perfumed nose with red cherry, raspberry, rose petals and violets. The palate is plump and ripe with fleshy red-berried fruits, satin texture on the front palate but a little abrasive on the back-palate. Prickly finish with huge persistency. An obdurate Clos de Vougeot that needs time, but still destined to become ravishing and lush.
Domaine Jean Grivot Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru

Details

Jean Grivot's exceptionally pure, elegant Pinot Noirs are consistently poised at the pinnacle of premium Burgundy. Grivot's 10 hectares of vineyards in Vosne-Romanée are managed by Étienne and his wife Marielle Grivot – the fifth generation of Grivots to run this elite Burgundy estate. Since Étienne took over from his father in 1990 he has traded lesser quality vineyards for more prestigious parcels within Burgundy's best sites, including Clos de Vougeot, and his holdings now cover a staggering 15 different appellations! Étienne practices a gentle and non-intrusive Burgundian winemaking style, believing that dense planting for small crops fully expresses the character of his full, rich Pinot Noir fruit. Deeply pitched with attractively spiced aromas that include iron-infused warm earth notes as well as animale and underbrush hints that lead to delicious, powerful and youthfully austere big-bodied flavors blessed with ample dry extract and a linear, concentrated and driving finish. There is real energy here and while the tannins are a bit brut at the moment, this is actually fairly refined as young Clos de Vougeot typically presents itself. Worth a close look as there is real depth here.
