Bartinney’s vineyards are located on the slopes of the Helshoogte (“Hell’s Heights”) Pass, overlooking Stellenbosch’s Banghoek Valley. Cabernet is planted on slopes and foothills of varying aspects, at elevations of 150 to 300 meters above sea level. Soils are mainly Oakleaf and Tukulu, deep red soils of decomposed granite. The winter that preceded the 2010 vintage was dry and short, which led to earlier than usual budding and flowering. Gale force winds during flowering and berry set meant that yields were severely reduced, but quality was exceptional. Irrigation had to be very carefully controlled to ensure that the vines did not stress excessively during the warm, dry ripening period. The small crop translated into powerful and robust wines, with rich, concentrated fruit flavors. The grapes were handpicked from eight distinct vineyard blocks on the farm, and each parcel was vinified separately. The grapes were de-stemmed and crushed with fermentation taking place over seven days. After an extended maceration of approximately one month, the wine was pressed and run to French oak barrels (30% new, 70% second fill), where it was matured for 18 months.
