Antinori Badia a Passignano Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG. The rainy and cold autumn and harsh winter led to later foliage growth than usual. Spring temperatures were mild, with intermittent rain showers that allowed the vines to develop on schedule. After a very hot July, August was cool with frequent rain showers and then September and October were warm during the day and cool at night, perfect for the maturation of Sangiovese. Harvest occurred the first week of October with terrific climate conditions, guaranteeing top-quality grapes. Badia a Passignano is produced exclusively from the highest quality grapes grown on the estate of the same name, situated in the Chianti Classico area. The badia (or “abbey”), is located in an area that has been inhabited since the Etruscan period and is one of the finest fortified abbeys in the area. It has been renowned for its wine production for more than 1,000 years. The Antinori family bought the 800-acre estate around the abbey, which is owned by Vallombrosian monks, in 1987 including the use of the monastery cellars.

The estate has served to take Piero Antinori’s experimental work with Tuscan wines to a higher level, producing wines that reflect the unique identity, personality and peculiarities of the Tuscan soil, as expressed through the Sangiovese grape. The excellent quality of the grapes and optimal weather conditions positively influenced this vintage from the start. After de-stemming and soft crushing, the grapes were placed in tanks where alcoholic fermentation took place. After alcoholic fermentation, malolactic fermentation took place in 300 liter and 225 liter new Hungarian oak barriques. After malolactic fermentation, the blend was created and placed back in the same barriques for 14 months. At the end of the aging period, every single barrique was tasted and the necessary selections made, after which the wine was bottled, and aged for an additional 12 months.
