Etude Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Details

Etude was founded on the philosophy that winemaking begins in the vineyard long before the harvest and, that superior grape growing diminishes the need for intervention by the winemaker, resulting in the authentic expression of the varietal. The growing season in Napa Valley was marked by its lack of significant weather events. Light spring rains were followed by cool and even summer temperatures, allowing for slow, deliberate ripening of the grapes to full and balanced maturity. The Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from this vintage were characterized as displaying intense balance, depth and complexity. The Etude Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is handcrafted with grapes from several unique benchland vineyards representing the major sub-appellations of Napa Valley, which, depending on the vintage, may include Rutherford, St. Helena, Oakville, Calistoga and Coombsville. By deliberately sourcing fruit from this group of exemplary vineyards, the assembled wine exhibits the range of Cabernet fruit flavors and textures with vitality and finesse. Etude’s philosophy remains steadfast and this Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon was crafted with very minimal winemaking intervention. The grapes were cold soaked for 3-5 days and fermented on their skins in open top fermenters. An extended maceration period followed fermentation to help modify the depth and mouthfeel of the wine, and to fully extract color, flavor and aromatics. The young wine was then racked into small French oak barrels – using a selection of coopers and forests to accentuate the vineyard distinctions – where it aged for 11 months. In order to maintain the unique characteristics of each vineyard, each block and lot was kept separate until this point when the assemblage was blended. The resulting wine was returned to barrel for an additional 11 months of aging. This Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is refined and elegant, opening with generous aromas of plum and blackberry that lead to subtle notes of black licorice and cassis. The palate displays a beautiful spectrum of ripe, dark fruits supported by distinctive barrel spice flavors and mouth coating tannins. This Cabernet Sauvignon showcases the signature style of Etude with depth and richness of fruit, a velvety texture and a lasting vibrancy. A firm and sturdy effort, at times rustic, with crushed rock and loamy earth woven with dried currant and dark berry. Intense and persistent, this is chunky now, built for cellaring. Etude's Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley bursts from the glass with juicy dark berries, grilled herbs, menthol, tar, tobacco and licorice. Firm tannins provide the backbone as this powerful, muscular Cabernet opens up in the glass. Raspberry jam, flowers and spices add lift on the finish. Slightly wild notes detract a touch from the wine's overall balance. Otherwise, this is a fine effort. The 2009 needs a few years to settle down, after which it should drink beautifully for another decade. The blend is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029. Good bright red-ruby. Aromas of blueberry, menthol, licorice and espresso, accented by sassafras and herbs. Juicy, spicy and energetic, with a bit of herbal lift to the smooth dark berry, tobacco leaf and coffee flavors. This moderately fleshy midweight finishes with dusty tannins and good acid cut. In a cool style for the year.
