Quick Overview

A full-bodied wine with round tannins, Roda Reserva reveals red fruit with predominant cherry notes on the nose and palate, as well as oak and spice.

Grapes for Roda Reserva are harvested from more than 20 carefully supervised vineyard blocks spread out among the best terroirs of Rioja. Each year only the top 17 blocks are vinified, guaranteeing superior grape quality. A team of 30 harvesters that returns year after year selects the grapes by hand. Typically two or three separate pickings are carried out to ensure that the grapes are perfectly ripe. In the winery, carefully sorted bunches are gently crushed in basket presses, then a cold soak extracts optimal color and tannins before a high-temperature fermentation and a long maceration. The grapes are vinified separately until it is determined which Roda wines each lot will produce. Aging is 16 months in French oak followed by 20 months in the bottle. The harvest began on September and ended in October. Ripening was advanced 10 days relative to other vintages. During the growing season, the early ripening stopped during a cold August. An extremely warm first week of September allowed the vines to catch up in the old vineyards where yields are very low. The weather was dry during the harvest and the quality of the grapes indicated an excellent vintage. For winegrowing, Roda’s general philosophy of low yields was a great benefit. Difficult conditions during the first week of September (some days over 96.8°F and hot nights) caused loss of vegetation and ripening stopped in high-yielding younger vineyards, while the low-yielding old vineyards completed ripening easily. During a quite rainy June, measures were taken to manage fungus-related diseases. In sum, 2006 will be an extraordinary vintage for Roda. Along with 2004 and 2005, 2006 completes an exceptional three-year period, similar to 1994, 1995 and 1996, what one Spanish wine journalist has dubbed “The Golden Trio, the three best consecutive vintages in Spain’s history.” With deep red color with blue tints, this wine shows expressive red berry and cherry aromas, with notes of subtle, toasty oak and fresh, complex wild spices. This wine shows medium- to full-bodied red fruit flavors in the mouth with impeccable, soft tannins. This wine pairs well with a wide range of foods. It can be enjoyed with starters, fish, meat and even some desserts.
